ARISTOLOCHIAS
The Aristolochiales are a group of paleoherbs, a basal group of flowering plants. There are around 700 species, most of them in the genus Aristolochia (around 500) and the rest in the genus Asarum. The majority of Aristolochias are tropical, though a number of them range as far north as Canada and Northern Japan. They may grow as climbing vines, short creeping herbs, and a few are shrub-like.
Aristolochias have attractive leaves and flowers, often with bizarre colors and patterns. Some have blooms that are oddly shaped which is why they are commonly refered to as "Dutchmans Pipe" or "Pelican Flower". Often these flowers produce a nasty odor that attracts flies.
