BRUGMANSIAS
Even though Brugmansias, commonly called "Angel Trumpets", have been in the United States for many many years, they have always been portrayed as "Evil Plants" and something you should not grow.
Brugmansias are toxic when ingested, the same as Eggplants, Four O'clocks, Lilly of the Valley, Potato, Tomato, Oleander, Azalea, Alocasia, Caladium, Diffenbachia, Easter Lily, Sweet Pea.....
You won't drop dead if you touch an Angel Trumpet. I've seen squirrels eat the leaves and cats chew on the bark with no ill effects... just be careful if you have small children and don't allow them to chew on it. I've had friends over who avoid the Angel Trumpets like they were radio-active but go over and touch and take cutings off our variegated Oleander... go figure.
Brugmansias have a wide range of leaf forms and indvidual growing habits. The Brugmansia flower has an even wider range of sizes, forms, colors and shapes. The different scents from Brugmansias have been described as similiar to underarm deodorant and cheap Avon perfume to just exotic and intoxicating. The scent from a 10 foot Brugmansia with around 100 blooms can be a bit overwelming.
