  • HOYAS

Hoyas are climbing or trailing plants with thick, fleashy leaves and clusters of waxy, star-shaped flowers with some sweet scented.

Hoyas were once part of the Apocinaceae family of plants until Robert Brown created Asclepiadaceae in 1810 to accommodate a group of Apocinaceae plants whose characteristics didn't quit fit (Milkweeds, Stapeliads and Dischidias). These plants have their pollen contained in gelatinous mases called pollinia. The only other group of plants with pollinia are Orchids.

When someone thinks of Hoyas they usually think of the old favorite, Hoya carnosa which is known as the old fashioned 'Wax Plant". When the new grower gets curious they soon find out that Hoya is a genus of around 250 different species plus numerous cultivars.

SPECIAL POINT... When removing old spent blooms be very careful to pick off only the flowers and flower stalks. Hoyas spurs produce flowers year after year. If you destroy the spurs you will reduce to future production of flowers.
