PALMS
Palms are among the most distinctive plants so rarely need description. Almost all of the 200 genera and 2600 species in the world are instantly reconizable as palms with the unrelated cycads possibly confusing the nonbotanist.
Palms are indeed tropical plants. Almost all species are native to tropical forests with very few tolerating
frost or dry soil. Palms range from tiny understory plants to towering trees.
Palms are distiguished for their usually tall, unbranched trunks topped by a crown of fan-shaped (palmate) or feathery (pinnate) fronds.
