PASSIFLORA
Most Passiflora are vining, climbing herbs with probably the most unique and complicated flowers in the plant world. The flowers of (most) Passiflora have five sepals and five petals which are in most cases very similar to each other with five stamens and three stigmas. The hallmark of the Passiflora bloom is the corona, an outgrowth at the base of the corolla. Some Passiflora have blooms very small and inconspicuous.
The leaves on the Passifloras come in very different shapes, quit possibly the highest number of different shapes out of all the plant families. According to different sources there are between 500 and 700 known species with a huge number of hybrids increasing year to year.
Many Passiflora can be grown in hanging baskets or on trellises. In warmer tropical climates they can be planted in-ground as long as you realize some can be very evasive and takeover if allowed.
